How it works

Modern browsers can decode and encode images, resample pixels on the graphics chip, read file metadata and even run neural networks. myownpic is a static website that uses those abilities. When you drop a photo, the browser reads it from your disk, applies your changes in memory and offers the result as a download. At no point is anything sent over the network.

The background remover is the one tool that downloads something: the open AI model it runs, once, to your browser’s cache. Your photos still never leave the device.

What that means for you

Honest limits

Everything is built in your device’s memory, so very large batches of huge photos can be slow on phones. AVIF output takes a few seconds per photo because the encoder runs without a GPU. Formats that browsers do not decode, such as TIFF, RAW and PSD, cannot be opened yet. The background removal model is smaller than the biggest cloud models and its licence covers non-commercial use.

After the first visit the site works offline: the tools are kept by your browser, and the encoders for JPG, WebP, AVIF and PNG ship with the site rather than living on a server. Installed as an app, it also accepts photos from the Android share sheet.

The site is free and has no ads. If that ever changes, the tools will stay free and the processing will stay on your device.
